Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is facing an FIR for allegedly using a government vehicle for political purposes, violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The FIR, registered on January 8 at Govindpuri police station, accuses Atishi of using a Public Works Department (PWD) car with registration number DL1LAL1469 for election-related activities. The complaint was filed by a local resident, prompting the Returning Officer of the Kalkaji constituency to direct the Assistant Commissioner of Police to initiate legal proceedings.
The General Administration Department (GNCTD) mandates an absolute ban on using official vehicles for campaigning or election-related travel during elections. This rule is enforced under MCC guidelines, which aim to maintain a fair and impartial electoral process. The FIR has been filed under Section 223(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS), a provision that penalizes the misuse of government resources for personal or political gain.
In her response, Atishi raised concerns about selective enforcement of MCC guidelines. She cited alleged inaction in other cases where political rivals were seen distributing cash, bedsheets, and gifts during their campaigns. Atishi stated, "The principles of free and fair elections must be upheld without bias," calling for consistent action against violations by all political parties.
The FIR comes as Atishi prepares to file her nomination for the Kalkaji constituency, which she represents as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate. The nomination, initially planned for January 8, was delayed due to her roadshow, and she is now expected to file on January 9. The election schedule allows candidates to submit nominations until January 17, with scrutiny taking place on January 18.
Delhi is set to vote in a single-phase election on February 5, with the results to be declared on February 8. The election will decide the 70-member Assembly, with the MCC in full effect to ensure compliance with electoral norms. Authorities are monitoring campaigns closely to prevent misuse of resources and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
